Can anyone make sense of this for me? I've been looking at wiring diagrams but most don't include this upper starter solenoid. I've tried figuring it out but I'm stuck. The ignition switch is doing nothing when you press the starter switch it turns over regardless of key position. I bought a new terminal block but I'm unsure what goes where since all the wires were on one terminal before.

LCT....the 4-speed 8N starter solenoid is 3-terminals, 2-heavy duty and 1-regular duty. The solenoid is 'hot' and is activated by the BIG starter button by the tranny shifter. Ignition key only controls the sparkies and is a known weaksister. I replaced mine 3-time one summer before I gott P.O. and botta waterproof marine grade toggle switch. I could have gotten a keyed switch iff'n I wanted. The picture you posted is a 4-terminal automobile solenoid which can work iff'n you know how. Yer obviously an electrical newbie so my recommendation to you is use the correct 3-terminal 8N tractor solenoid that mounts on top of yer starter motor....respectfully, electrical Dell

WTF is all that? Did you do that? I concur with JMOR -start by yanking all that carp off, literally, and get your self all the correct parts to do it right. You can google/bing search for 'Wiring Pictograms by JMOR' or email me for directions to the 'other' Ford N-Series Tractor club website that ha s it for FREE download in pdf format. He has put together a comprehensive list showing diagrams with pictures of every possible CORRECT way to wire these old Ford Tractors regardless if original 6-volt/positive ground or if a 12-volt convulsion was done on it. Most non-starting electrical issues on these old Fords are usually caused by someone doing a '12-volt conversion' abortion like yours. I'd start with first getting all the correct parts beginning with a good wiring harness. While you're waiting for the UPS delivery guy to arrive with your new, correct parts, take your battery, generator, starter, ammeter, coil, voltage regulator to your trusty, local starter/alternator shop-guy, the one who knows about these old Ford Tractors, and he can bench test them all for you, usually for free. Bring him a couple of pizzas or boxes of donuts and he'll be happy. Get new, correct parts here at LINK below:

'Upper' starter solenoid? Is there other one
that actually has the battery/starter cables
on it? Myself,I'd tear that whole mess off
of there and start over.

Look up JMORE's wiring diagrams. find the one that uses the parts you have, you will notice that you have some parts that do not belong there.
A new wiring harness can be had on this site or some others for $20.. It is not difficult as there are actually only a few wires .
You do have a mess there and if you take the guys advice they will be there to give you any help you might need during the process. They know their stuff.

This is how this was set up. This is my first tractor and when I look at the wiring diagrams they are nothing like this. So sounds like I need to start over

Thank you sir. Last night I tried to clean up this wiring mess. It got very confusing and I knew it couldn't be right. The tractor starts but the ignition is off and that's weird. I'll look up those diagrams and make this right. I do have a new solenoid that goes on the starter so that sounds like all I need.

You also need a new wiring harness. strip all the old wiring out and start over. It is really pretty simple.

Do you have any suggestions on what wiring harness to get? The alternator that's on the tractor has three wires running off it.

I gave you the LINK below to Dennis Carpenter for parts. get a wiring harness for your side-mount 52 8N then follow JMOR's wiring pictograms to wire it correctly. I'd dump the 3-wire alternator and get the correct GM 1-wire unit.
